I think the 650 Savage is a good step up from the 250 Virago. I rode the savage for about 2 years, and then felt I was ready for something bigger. (there are many around this forum who disagree) When I took that advance course, I wish I'd had the Savage, as it is far easier to manuveur than the Virago. I do find that the Virago is great on the highway. I rode 30 miles on the highway with it, and I am not a highway rider at all. I felt fine the whole way.
I think you will be happy with the Savage, and it is a good next step.
